Phoenicia, Tyre. 78/7 BC AR Shekel, 30 Pieces of Silver
Phoenicia, Tyre. 78/7 B.C.E. AR Shekel (14.4g). Infamous "30 Pieces of Silver" type. Laureate head of Melqart to right. Reverse: Eagle standing left, with right foot on prow of ship, palm branch over right shoulder, club and date HM = 48 on left; surrounded by inscription TYPOY IEPAS KAIASYLOY (of Tyre the Holy and Inviolable). This is the most likely candidate for the infamous "30 Pieces of Silver." Very well centered, sharply struck in high relief, virtually as made. H-917. Superb Extremely Fine.
Estimated Value $300 - 400.
