This is a very piece that commemorates “The International Competition for the Phoebe Hearst Architectural Plan for the University of California.” On one side there is an engraved image of Phoebe Hearst (wife of mining magnate George Hearst), while on the back appears the “Members of the Jury.” The jury was comprised of S.B. Reinstein, Paul Wallot, J.L. Pascal, R. Norman Shaw and Walter Cook. The story of this piece begins in 1898 when the Hearst family felt the need to one-up the Stanford family, after the founding of Stanford University in 1891. The Hearst adopted the University of California and held a competition to further develop the school to become a world-class institution. The winner was Frenchman Emile Benard, but Benard later refused to be involved with the plan architectural after visiting San Francisco and seeing the Bay Area as uncultured. The piece weighs 5.72 troy oz. and measures 2.5” x 3.20”. - HKA#65823
