Phineas T. Barnum Extraordinary Manuscript: "The Noblest art, is That of Making Others Happy" Autograph Fair Copy Signed, 1 page, on his embossed letterhead, 4.5" by 7", Marina, Bridgeport, Ct., July 19, 1889; inscribed to Mr. H.P.R. Holt of Takoma Park. In 1889, the great American impresario and self-proclaimed "Prince of Humbugs," Barnum summarized in a notebook his principles of life -- which, apparently, he then wrote out for Mr. Holt."The noblest art is that of making others happy, honesty, sobriety, industry, economy, education, good habits, perseverance, cheerfulness, love to God and good will toward men. These are the preeminent requisites for securing Health, Independence, or a Happy Life, the respect of Mankind and the special favor of our Father in Heaven." Barnum has added beneath his signature, at bottom, "Born July 5, 1810, Died ----- " A quintessential piece! From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
