[Philology] - SCALIGER, Josephus Justus - Nova editio Catulli, Tibulli, Propertii [and] Castigationes [and] MURETUS, Marcus Antonius - Commentatius in Catullum [and] Scholia in Tibullum & Propertium. Antwerp, Aegidius Radaeus, 1582, 8vo, contemp. vellum, [12]-274-[2], 240-[8], 192-[6] pp. Good copy. € 250/350 Scaliger's authoritative Catullus edition was 1st published at Paris in 1577, in revenge to Muretus who had fooled Scaliger's connoisseurship of old Latin. Ironically Muretus' commentaries on the 3 poets are here added to Scaliger's notes. They show 2 sides of classical philology in the 16th c. Scaliger's ed. is dedicated to Cl. Dupuy and the preliminaries contain a Latin poem by Jean Dorat and one by Florent Chrestien. Muretus has dedications to Bernardino Lauredano (dated Venice 1554), Torquatus Bembu Petri F. (Patavii 1558) and Franciscus Gonzaga Ferd. F. (ibid.). Both commentaries conclude with a set of indices. At the end are added a few remarks from Muretus' "Variae lectiones". Orn. on title-page, type orns. Ex-libris pasted down, Gibier on title-page. Ref. Belg. Typ. 607. Adams C-1156. STCDutch (London BL) p. 48.
