Phillipsburgh, LC- The Phenix Bank $3 May 4,
Phillipsburgh, LC- The Phenix Bank $3 May 4, 1837 Ch. # 590-10-02-06
This bank is thought to have been a spurious institution of the type that proliferated during the "Hard Times" period 1837-1839. Although certainly a Canadian issue, the note's use of the Vermont nomenclature was likely done to make people believe that the was from a U.S. bank and to facilitate circulation in Vermont as well. Charlton comments that "All [notes from here] are very rare." Charlton also indicates signed and issued threes as "Institutional collections only," but this is a signed and issued $3 which is available right now to the collecting fraternity.
