The two earliest silver mines in the district were the East Comanche and Algonquin, and both were bought in 1877 by Philadelphia financiers and organized into the Algonquin Company. In 1880 a rich new body of ore was discovered, which ultimately resulted in the construction of an 80-stamp mill, producing $500,000 in 1882 and 1883. The camp of Hasmark grew up around this mill. When silver production played out the mine was shut down. It was revitalized as a manganese mine in 1916 and operated until about 1940 [Ref: www.deq.mt.gov/abandonedmines/linkdocs/?65tech.mcpx].
