French general (1856–1951) honored as a national hero for his defense of Verdun during World War I, but who was convicted after World War II of dealings with the enemy while head of the collaborationist Vichy regime. Superb matte-finish 5 x 3.25 postcard photo of Petain triumphantly entering Metz on horseback on November 19, 1918, signed in black ink, "Ph. Petain." Matted to an overall size of 7 x 5.5. In fine condition, with areas of light silvering. The armistice had been signed only a week earlier on November 11, ending World War I in victory for the Allies.
