French general (1856–1951) who was honored as a national hero for his defense of Verdun during World War I, but who was convicted after World War II of dealings with the enemy while head of the collaborationist Vichy regime. War-dated ALS in French, signed “Petain,” one page, 5.5 x 4.25, personal letterhead, May 20, 1917. Untranslated letter from Petain acknowledging congratulations on his promotion to field marshal. A few creases and a paperclip impression at the top, otherwise fine condition.
