Philipp Jacques de Loutherbourg the Younger (Straßburg 1740 - 1812 Chiswick/London) Dancing Shepherds in the Roman Campagna, oil on canvas, 37x45cm, carved, gilt frame(Wo)€ 16.000 - 22.000 US $ 15.840 - 21.780 Loutherbourg quickly made his reputation as an animal- and landscape painter. The above depiction of the Roman Campagna offers an excellent example of Loutherbourg's ability to combine his talents into compositions of superior harmony. Although the scene contains an echo of his model Berchem, the painter is able to assert his individual style. He was a member of the Royal Academies in Paris and London. The next 31 paintings come from a traditional Austrian industrialist family's private collection going back 200 years. With the exception of three works cleaned by our restoration department, the painting are covered with a very dark varnish - the 19th century's popular 'gallery tone'. The collection comprises examples of every major European school of painting.
