He later moved first to Middelburg and in 1718 to The Hague. In 1725 he became Wilhelm VIII. of Hessia's court painter in Kassel. In 1747 Van Dyck was appointed court painter of Prince Willem IV. of Orange for whom he painted a number of portraits. Sometimes known as the "minor van Dyck" ("kleine van Dyck") his signature was occasionally changed to that of the more famous "A. van Dyck" following Philip's death in 1753.
