Philip Hussey (1713-1793)
PORTRAIT OF JOSEPH WITHERALL Esq.
signed under the relining: Mr Joseph Witheral PHussey Pinxt. 8(?ber) 1743
oil on canvas (relined) in a carved wood frame
125 by 99cm., 49 by 39in.
Provenance:’The Irish Sale’, Sotheby’s, London, 21 May 1999, Lot 252
Born in Cloyne, Co. Cork, the son of a clothier and an accomplished violinist,
Hussey left home at a young age, setting out as a sailor. Strickland records
that he whiled away his time at sea sketching the figure-heads of the ships and
after surviving several shipwrecks, returned to Dublin to become a professional
artist. The present work would seem to be a very early example, pre-dating his
earliest known work by three years (Figgis and Rooney, Irish Paintings in the
National Gallery of Ireland Vol.1, NGI, Dublin, 2001, p.255). The subject of
this portrait is listed in Richard Lucas’ Cork Directory for the year 1787 as
being an alderman for the town of Cork. Burke lists the name `Witherall’ in his
Irish Pedigrees, mentioning that a pedigree of that family is housed in the
manuscripts department of Trinity College Library.
