Union general (1831–1888) whose cavalry command blocked Lee’s escape at Appomattox. ALS signed “P. H. Sheridan,” one lightly-lined page both sides, 7.75 x 9.75, Headquarters, Military Division of the Gulf, New Orleans letterhead, October 25, 1865. Sheridan writes to Major General H. G. Wright in Galveston. In part: “I fully concur in terminating the railroad at Savacca it will suffice for our wants. The General order from the War Dept. reducing the staff officers of Department and district commanders will have to be carried out without recourse for change. I think the order does not object to selecting officers from the line but is a—[?] at staff appointees. I have discontinued the Division organizations of the 13th and 14th Army Corps as they existed only in theory in consequence of the muster.” After signing, Sheridan adds a postscript on the reverse, “Your correspondence with Gov. Hamilton has not yet reached me,” which he signs “P. H. Sheridan, Maj. Genl.” In fine, fresh condition.
