Philadelphia derringer percussion pocket pistol stamped J. Derringer, Philadela on lock and breech, agent marked “Made for A. J. Plate, San Francisco Wart Steel”. J. Derringer was actually a tailor and these pistols were actually made by Slotter, pirating Henry Deringer’s fame. The pistol shows an even light grey to brown patina finish, some traces of brown case hardening, some minor erosion and pinprick pitting. The stock is good, shows some even wear at the edges from carry and use. The mounts are lightly engraved German silver with pineapple finial, similar in styling to Deringer, but not exact. The barrel shows shallow rifling and less groves than Henry Deringer. The pistol measures 4-1/4” overall with less than 1-1/4” barrel. A good and small peanut size derringer with some even carry and wear. Probably a hideout pistol in the gold-rush era. Est: $1,500 - $3,000
