<B>Philadelphia, PA</B></I> - $5 Original Fr. 397 <B>The Bank of North America</B></I> Ch. # 602<BR>An evenly circulated Original Series $5 from this historic institution, which was exempted by an Act of Congress from the requirement that all banks accepting a federal charter under the National Banking Act use the word "National" somewhere in their title. Legend has it that this legislation was passed in recognition of this bank's leading role in selling U.S. Treasury debt to the public during the darkest days of the Civil War.
