Paul Jenkins was a major proponent of abstract expressionism during its rise in the early 1950?s inspired by the work of Jackson Pollack. Born in Kansas City Missouri in 1923, Jenkins studied at the Kansas City Art Institute before entering the Naval Air Corps in 1944. Upon his return in 1948 he studied further at the Art Students League in New York where he met Mark Rothko. By 1955 he had his first solo exhibition in the U.S. at the Zoe Dusanne Gallery in Seattle which also became the first of many museums to purchase his work. His paintings can be found in private collections and museums world wide, including; The Musee d?Art Contemporain and Musee Picasso in France, The Tate Gallery and Victoria and Albert Museum in Great Britain, The National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo, The Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among many others.
