Petrus Bertius Map of The Americas 1624. Published by Petrus Bertius (1565-1629), being a close copy of Jodocus Hondius' maps of the Americas published variously from 1606-1618 posthumous. Bertius was related to Hondius by marriage. This example is an extremely rare original 1st State of the map, dated 1624 and depicting named settlements from California and up through most of the northwest coast. Examples of the more common second state of the map (published in 1640) show the date erased from the cartouche, and all of the named settlements replaced with a fanciful coastline and the phrase "Pays Non Encore Descouverts" (Lands Not Yet Discovered). Mapmakers of the early 17th century either believed that California was an island, or was peninsular in geography. Having engraved "Undiscovered Land" on the second state map departs from the opinion as it is offered on the first state, and leaves that argument for future development. The map offered here is hand-colored, measures 22.5" x 17.5", and is untrimmed with complete borders. It has remained in its present frame since 1933. Unlike the second and third (1646) states, this 1st state was not printed for binding in an atlas, being issued solely as a separate map which accounts for its rarity. Very few examples can be traced, and public auction records are non-existent for the past several years. Framed to an overall size of 24.5" x 18.5".
