Peter Reynolds. Behind the Evidence
Peter Reynolds [pseudonym for Amelia Reynolds]. Behind the Evidence. Everett: Visionary Publishing Co., 1936.

First edition. Twelvemo. 238 pages.

Original black cloth with yellow titles on the spine and front board. With "Research Library Twentieth Century Fox" ink stamps on the pastedowns, front free endpaper and title page. Binding shaken but sound. Rather crudely bound in an identical fashion to Lovecraft's The Shadow Over Innsmouth by the same publisher. A good copy of an incredibly rare volume.

According to Chalker & Owings, with publisher William Crawford as the source, only 100 copies were printed, and of these only 37 were correctly hardbound. Of these, approximately 15 were sold with the remainder being taken by the author. Also, Behind the Evidence is one of only two books published by Visionary, the other being Lovecraft's The Shadow Over Innsmouth, and one of only a handful Crawford published with his first two companies, Fantasy Pubs and Visionary. In fact, William Crawford is the most important figure in early science fiction specialty press publication, and Behind the Evidence is one of his earliest efforts, before he founded FPCI, a cornerstone of classic science fiction publishing. From the Robert and Diane Yaspan Collection.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
