Biography: Peter Max (1937-__) was born in Berlin, grew up in China, and traveled with his family to Israel and throughout Europe before eventually arriving in America. He began painting, and soon rose to prominence in the mid 1960's with expressionistic art that explored wild color juxtapositions. His work in the 1970's included a commission for a postage stamp in the theme of environmental preservation, a cause in which he devoted himself. Max has painted four former U.S. Presidents: Carter, Ford, Bush and Reagan. His concern for world peace has led to his involvement in some significant political events, including stamp designs for the first United Nations Environmental Summit, and a carving from a portion of the Berlin Wall. He has been the official artist for the World Cup USA, the Super Bowl, and the Grammy Awards. His awards are numerous, and include honorable recognition for product, fashion, food, book, and poster designs. His latest project is a collaboration with computer effects producer Silicon Graphics. Peter Max has continued his optimistic world vision into the new Millennium, and strives to be a "Global Artist."
