American military officer who served as a captain of the Texas Rangers under Sam Houston during the Mexican-American War and went on to serve as the third governor of Texas (1810–1898). Three partly-printed vellum DSs as governor of Texas, each signed “P. H. Bell,” one page, 15 x 12, dated from 1851 to 1853. Collection of three different land grants, each signed at the conclusion by Governor Bell, with two countersigned by George W. Smyth and the other countersigned by Stephen Crosby. In overall very good condition, with expected document wear, soiling, and large areas of paper loss to the 1853 document. Smyth, the commissioner of the Texas General Land Office who countersigned two of these documents, is also notable as one of sixty signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence.
