American politician, historian, and publisher (1790–1868) who served as Mayor of Washington, DC, in the 1830s. Force assembled and published an extensive collection of documents from the Revolutionary War under the title American Archives, which included a copy of the Declaration of Independence made from the original copper plates engraved by William J. Stone in 1823. Ink signature, “Peter Force, Washington, May 12, 1865,” on a pink 7 x 9 album page, still contained within its original autograph book. In fine condition, with light scattered soiling to page and various dings and loose cover to the autograph book.
