Peter Force: A National Calendar, for 1820: Containing an Official List of all the officers, Civil, Military, and Naval, of the United States of America; To Which is added an Almanac for the Current Year and A handsome Map of the City of Washington and Georgetown, with the Public Buildings, Bridges, &c. (Washington: Davis and Force, 1820), 228 pages, with 22” x 17” fold out map of Washington engraved by William I. Stone bound in front, the volume is illustrated with engravings of the “President's House, State, Treasury, War and Navy Departments”, original marbled boards, leather spine with gilt “1820”, 12mo (4” x 6.5”), light crazing to leather spine, shelf wear to boards especially at the edges and corners, areas of staining on the pastedowns, light toning to pages, small marginal tears, period marginalia, else very good. The personal copy of Captain Thomas Brown, commander of the United States Navy ship Peacock, a veteran of the War of 1812. Brown has made several emendations and corrections to the listing of naval officers and their assignments of which he was no doubt familiar. Rare and informative, this directory comprises a who's who of the federal government circa 1820 with engraved illustrations of key government buildings including some floorplans. William I. Stone's engraving of the “President's House” on the fold out map is thought to be the first known image of the structure after being burned by the British in 1814. This same year Stone was commissioned by John Quincy Adams to reproduce a facsimile of the Declaration of Independence. The Stone copies, of which 31 out of the original 201 produced are known to exist are the most highly sought after replicas of the Declaration. Includes a ten-page description of “Washington City” with demographic data and real estate information. Records indicate that no copies of this work have been offered at auction since the early 1970s.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
