Rare and informative, this directory comprises a who's who of the federal government circa 1820 with engraved illustrations of key government buildings including some floorplans. William I. Stone's engraving of the “President's House” on the fold out map is thought to be the first known image of the structure after being burned by the British in 1814. This same year Stone was commissioned by John Quincy Adams to reproduce a facsimile of the Declaration of Independence. The Stone copies, of which 31 out of the original 201 produced are known to exist are the most highly sought after replicas of the Declaration. Includes a ten-page description of “Washington City” with demographic data and real estate information. Records indicate that no copies of this work have been offered at auction since the early 1970s.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
