Versatile American industrialist, inventor, and politician (1791–1883) who designed the first steam locomotive built in the United States, the Tom Thumb, and patented a gelatin dessert later marketed under the familiar brand name Jell-O. ALS, one page, 7.75 x 9.75, May 2, 1853. Cooper writes to Green C. Bronson. In full: “This letter will be handed you by Mr. Isack Moran who desires to be appointed inspector of the uper [sic] District on the East river now held by Wm. F. Jackson—Mr. Moran is a gentle man whose character & qualifications admirably fit him for the place he solicits—His appointment will be greatfully [sic] received by a large circle of Democratic friends.” In very good condition, with several intersecting folds, one vertical line passing through the start of his name, a small area of paper loss, and a few spots of wax remnants. Accompanied by a vintage color caricature from Puck magazine.
