French volunteer in the American Revolution who served as aide-de-camp to General Louis Duportail; he saw action at Valley Ford and was taken prisoner at Charleston in 1780. LS signed “P. Castaing,” one page, 6.75 x 8.5, April 16, 1782. Letter to a colonel (quite possibly Colonel Henry Jackson). In part: “It is my duty to inform you of the reason of my delaying so long at this place; before General DuPortail's departure I obtained his leave to stay a couple of months in this city to complete some private business; since that I have been necessarily detained by the Minister of War as you will be satisfied by his own assertion when I shall go to camp. I am now preparing for the journey and expect to have soon the honor of being under your command. I recommend myself to your equity for my right in the regiment.” In fine condition. Here Castaing refers to the French minister of war, Comte De Vergennes, who consented to the American peace negotiations with Great Britain which came to a preliminary agreement in 1782.
