Businessman and art collector (1834–1915) known as the patriarch of Philadelphia's Widener family. He supplied food to the Union Army during the Civil War, electrified Philadelphia's trolley lines, and became a founding organizer of U.S. Steel and the American Tobacco Company. His celebrated art collection focused on the Old Masters such as Vermeer, Rembrandt, Raphael, and El Greco, plus French Impressionists including Corot, Renoir, Degas, and Manet. Partly-printed DS, one page, 11.75 x 8, November 12, 1894. Stock certificate issued to Robert M. Cox for 20 shares in the Philadelphia Passenger Railway Company, signed at the conclusion in ink by Widener as president. In fine condition, with cancelation holes obliterating much of the signature.
