Peruvian Chulucanas Merchant Woman Sculpture
Item/Description: Vintage Peruvian Chulucanas polychrome pottery sculpture depicting a merchant or market woman seated among small vessels, from Chulucanas, late 20th century, circa 1970s–1990s. Hand-formed and burnished clay rendered in the region’s characteristic rotund, calabash-inspired proportions, the figure is finished using the traditional reduction-fired kiln-smoking process with mango leaves to achieve a deep satiny black and brown surface, complemented by hand-applied polychrome slip decoration in earthy red and green tones. The base bears an incised signature attributed to Juana Sosa of the Sosa family workshops, associated with the revival of pre-Inca Vicus and Tallan ceramic techniques in the Piura region. Integrates multiple vessel forms within the composition, reflecting traditional daily life subject matter in Chulucanas folk art.
