Peru Weaving ''Butterflies (Mariposas)'' Eddie Sulca. Measures 46'' x 56'' without fringe. A woven signature is on the lower right corner and a label is on the opposite side, which says, ''MARIPOSAS II W-17-1''. Eddie Sulca is Peru's preeminent weaver of the old Wari weavers' technique and effect. While many try to duplicate his three-dimensional art, none succeed. This weaving is titled, ''Butterflies (Mariposas).'' Sulca's grandfather learned the Wari technique from the last of them, in 1923. The pattern is butterflies which are perceived as messengers from the gods. They remind of the importance in seeking peace and happiness and a need to coexist with nature and their neighbors. A subtle insinuation of the relationship between life and death, war and peace is seen in the representation of the stylized warriors' heads placed between the stylized butterflies. Using finely woven Peruvian sheep's wool (95%) and long staple cotton (5%), Sulca dyes the fiber with hand gathered natural leaves, berries, branches, roots and insects which produce colors unachievable by other dyes. The weave is very tight - approximately 160 threads per inch or more and the threads are very fine; never coarse or fuzzy. The weavings can be washed in cold water. This is an aboslutely stunning and unique art piece anyone would be proud to hang on their wall.
