Peru, Lima,April 30, 1868 - Peruvian Commemorative Railroad Medal :
Heretofore unknown Peruvian railroad medal. Possible discovery piece. Measures 1 and 1/4," cast in silver. It was struck a few days before Henry Meiggs signed his first railroad contract with Peruvian authorities. Reverse has the name of the Vice President, Pedro Diez Canseco, on the outer edge. Listed in the middle are the names of several government officials. On the obverse, there is an engraving of a lone man in a train engine. There are no cars behind the engine. While there is smoke coming from the stack, it is going downward toward the engineer. In the background there is one mountain. Around the edge are the words, "Ferro-Carril de Mejta a Arequipa." The edges do not evidence any wear.
