Personal silver seal of Raja Balwant Singh of Alwar (1809-1845), 150.55g, 78mm, dated VS1885 (1827AD), with Devanagari inscription five lines, ???? ???? / ??? ?? ???? / ???? ????? / ???? ?????? / ???? (Shri Seeta / Ram jee Sahay / Raja Balwant / Simha Bahadur / 1885). The seal is beautifully executed with the inscription being set against a backdrop of finely engraved filigree pattern and embellished by floral and dotted borders. The Devanagari letters are executed in a ‘manuscript style’. Raja Balwant Singh was the illegitimate son of Rao Raja Bakhtawar Singh of Alwar (ruled 1791-1815) from his Brahmin courtesan, Moosi Rani. Upon the death of his father, he disputed the succession of his adopted brother and as a result was imprisoned in 1824 by nobles partisan to the latter. He was then released and granted the tehsils of Tijara, Tupukra, Butaee, and Mundawar, together with an allowance of 2 lakhs p.a., in compensation for relinquishing his claims on the Alwar gaddi, effective 14th April 1826. The date on this seal is just after this event, so it is evident that the seal marks the beginning of this new career for Balwant Singh. Superb, Extremely Fine, Very Rare.
