The memoir of the Union general who lead his army to victory in the Civil War. Published by Samuel Clemens' publishing company Charles L. Webster & Co. (Clemens' niece's husband). It was the second book to be published by the company, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" being the other. This memoir was written in haste as Grant was terminally ill with cancer and wanted to leave money to his family.
The cover (gold embossed) and the date of publication indicate that this a first edition set. The boards of both editions have normal wear, there's a bit of foxing in both. Both volumes' tissues ar in place, bit there is a torn out fly page in volume I and a slight spine weakness but not an issue. Maps are intact. A VERY historical piece of literary work. Please see photos for more detail and condition.
