I and II (of three volumes). 4to, gilt leather binding and spine, Vol. 1: xvii, 537pp, Vol. 2: 414pp, xi pp. Vol. 1 with 89 color plates including two folding facsimiles of Japanese paintings, and additional folding maps; Vol. 2 with chromolithographed plates, charts, two folding maps, and a facsimile of the original treaty with Japan.

These first two volumes refer to the period of time when international relations were starting to develop between the United States and Japan. 

Condition: Edgewear to binding; Vol. 1, front cover separated, leather spine partially separated from front board, but still present; maps, plates, charts in very good shape.
