Many works of Art can induce one to speak in a whisper.....this is one of those examples....When you stand before this magnificent work it is easy to see why she was "meant" to be a Queen, the Noble upheld head, the intelligence behind the eyes, the faint, playful smile that could at once put you at ease, all captured in this Stunning interpretation. This Sevres Porcelain bust dates from 1774 to 1780 and is signed on the back part of the robe by the Sculptor Felix LeComte, and signed on the inner rim of the base by the gilder, with a very clear mark of interlaced "L"s. LeComte had first sculpted this bust of the Queen in 1773 of pure white Carara Marble, and in May of 1774 the Bust was sent to the Sevres Factory, where LeComte over-saw the molding and reproduction of the piece in Porcelain. The Marble bust was returned to the Queen's Bedroom at Versailles where it was displayed during Marie Antoinette's lifetime. It was removed during the revolution and sent to the Louvre, and was returned to Versailles in the mid 1960's , and can once again be seen on the mantelpiece of the Queen's Bedroom. There is an Identical Bust, but without the gilding in the State Museum in Berlin, and another example, but with a floral painted base, and without gilding that was part of the personal collection of The Empress Eugeine' de Montijo, wife of Napoleon III, and is on display today in the Grand Salon of the Napoleon III Apartments of the Louvre.
