Period Copy of Three 17th Century Land Grants
Francis Lovelace - Period Copy of Three 17th Century New York Land Patents, three pages, 7.25" x 12.25", dated March 30, 1672. This early document is in the name of New York's second governor, Francis Lovelace (1621-1675). A verso panel states the manuscript is a copy. Notwithstanding, the document's rounded calligraphy appears to be of late 17th - early 18th century style, making it a survivor from New York's earliest days as an English colony. The grant describes in great detail lands above Albany that were ceded to settlers Goosser Gerritson and Philip Pieters. Deep toning, splits along three folds. Good condition.
The year after this grant was drawn up, Governor Lovelace lost New York to the Dutch and was locked up in the Tower of London where he died in disgrace. Ex. Henry E.
