Percussion market hunting gun signed “W. Rugh, Maker, Peoria, Ills.” Circa about 1850. The gun measures 52-1/2” overall with 35” heavy round barrel secured by two iron keys. The bore is slightly over 1”; the metalsurfaces show a grey to brown patina, some light cleaning long ago, generally good with maker’s name and Peoria on lock. The gun shows a pewter fore end cap and plain wood selected for strength; the wood is good withnormal dings, mars, scratches and small losses around the butt plate. The action is working. This is a scarce Illinois maker and few of these market hunting guns are American made as the British and Belgium makers hadthe market cornered in this era. Est.: $1,000-$3,000.
