Percussion dueling/target pistol signed in fancy engrave script on lock “J. M. Happoldt & Son, Charleston S.C.” .41 caliber smoothbore, 8-1/2” barrel, 15” overall. Medium weight octagon barrel. Half stocked in good quality walnut with typical Happoldt checkering, flat sides, and distinctive border. Single set trigger, iron mounts, silver barrel key escutcheon. The metal surfaces show a brown patina finish with light to slightly heavy erosion and pitting on barrel and some scaling from moisture. The lock shows traces of case hardening and has survived better than the barrel. The stock has been broken and repaired at the wrist. The stock shows some slight refinishing. The barrel key escutcheon shows some dents, there is a compression crack in the left front of the forend. The action is good, the pistol is good overall. Happoldt family worked in Charleston, South Carolina and their pistols are actively sought by southern arms collectors, and about a dozen are known. From the William R. Orbelo Collection. Est: $2,500 - $5,000
