Percussion Plains Rifle, by W.W. Hackney, NVSN, .54 cal., 28-1/2'' heavy octagon barrel, walnut halfstock, set trigger, sideplate and hammer lightly engraved and marked ''Rice'', top of barrel flat marked ''W.W. Hackney'', dating from the late 1850s. Hackney is listed in ''Gunmakers of Ohio'' as a gunmaker of buffalo guns for the western trade. Nickel silver wedge escutcheon and pewter forend tip. Condition is about fine. Brown barrel with light carbon spotting and light wear at edges. Toning to upper tang. Stock shows light scuffs and scratches. Markings are clear. Set trigger needs cleaning and adjustment, but regular trigger works as designed. Brass-tipped hickory ramrod is present. Est.: $2,500-$4,000. (Antique)
