Percussion Halfstock Plains Rifle, marked ''Cincinnati'', NVSN, approx. .35 cal., 39.5'' unmarked octagonal barrel, German silver blade front sight, dovetailed buckhorn style rear sight. Circa mid-19th Century. Iron lockplate engraved at rear and marked ''Cincinnati'' (likely other markings obscured by pitting), double set triggers. Brass triggerguard with scrolled tang, brass crescent buttplate, engraved brass lower buttplate tang, brass screw escutcheon opposite lock, two brass and one iron ramrod thimbles (missing hardwood ramrod), brass nosecap. Varnished artificially tiger-striped walnut stock with ivory heart inlaid at carved cheekpiece, lightly engraved brass patchbox opens to trap in right side buttstock. Condition is about good, with a dark brown patina to iron parts and deep pitting on lockplate ahead of hammer (percussion nipple and drum bolster need adjustment to align with hammer). Stock is solid and smooth showing darkened varnish, a crack at left breech area, and wear and marks. A plain and serviceable rifle built for rugged duty on the Western American frontier. Est.: $400-$600. (Antique)
