The note would rate the full Gem grade were it not for some petty ink seeping at the serial number. This is not a rare note, but it becomes important due to the signature of John Morton, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Eleven different signers of the Declaration of Independence also signed Colonial notes. Several are very rare, and only one (John Hart of New Jersey) can be considered relatively common. Morton's signature does appear with some regularity on the market, but virtually never with the bold, dark clarity seen here. This is the finest Morton signature that we can ever recall having seen on a Colonial note, and we would not be surprised, on the current strong market, to see it reach or exceed . . .
