Sent by Black's cousin William Leighty, a veteran of the 85th PA Infantry, Co. C, to Black's wife Jennie in Loudon County, VA, letter reads in part, ''Dear Cousin...let us know...whether you have heard anything more about Black or not...I suppose you expected me down there before this time. Well, I could not get away but if nothing happens, I will be down next Saturday a week. I have nothing to write about but what you are all familiar with the surrender of Lee and the end of the war. Now as soon as you get this, sit right down and answer it for we are very anxious to know how John is. Whether he is dead or alive yet.
