SALMON P. CHASE (1808-1873) American politician and jurist. Chase served as Senator from Ohio, governor of that state, U.S. Treasury Secretary and a Chief Justice of the United States. Chase was a staunch opponent of slavery, a stanch powerfully illustrated by this quotation. Autograph Quotation Signed, “S.P. Chase.” One page, 5 1/8” x 8”. No place. February 23, 1865. . Chase writes, “Call no man master upon Earth.” It should be noted that on the very day Chief Justice Chase penned this quotation, Minnesota became the seventeenth state to ratify the 13th Amendment. Mounted to a larger leaf. Some discoloration from glue at left edge. Overall Very Fine.
