Penn. Congressman John Bucher Letter Archive
Pennsylvania Congressman John Bucher Letter Archive. This lot includes four letters written in John Bucher's hand, written to William Ayres, his brother-in-law, concerning a variety of political, as well as family matters. It is clear from the tone of the letters that Bucher and Ayres have “issues”. In a two page letter, dated September 18, 1830, Bucher appears to call his brother-in-law's bluff about the sale of a lot owned by his father. It reads in part: “I received a letter from Harrisburg amongst other matters communicated, it is alledged sic you are making great complaints…that you can produce a person that will give $1000 for the same property…will you be so good as to assure the gentleman…he shall have the property…provided the Gentleman…shew sic a disposition to close in with the one thing needful - cash.”. The other three letters, written from Washington while Bucher was serving in the House touch on several matters of a political nature. In a two page letter dated December 18, 1832, Bucher writes: “…the arena of Strife, furnishes matter continually for intense consideration - John C. Calhoun is elected to the Senate…”. The other two letters deal mainly with matters of soldier's pensions. All letters have the usual fold creases, the paper slightly toned, else very good.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
