16" x 11.5" executed on woven paper. Initialed and dated J.W.I. 84, lower left, with detailed manuscript key titled Del Oso Mines and Mill, Mariposa Co. Cal.. A fine view showing 20 different locales including the Quartz Mill, shaft house, boarding house, ore dumps, blacksmith shops and more, all related to the mine.

Del Oso was originally founded during the height of the California gold rush, and at its peak had a population of 3000-5000 inhabitants. It is unclear if this is a contemporary image of the hard-rock operations which began in the late 1850s, or whether it was actually executed in 1884. Nearly the entire town burned in 1888; today only ruins remain of some of the buildings.

A fine drawing of this Sierra gold-mining town.
