Rear admiral in the US Navy (1824–1899) who helped enforce the blockade of the Confederacy's east coast. Civil War–dated ALS signed “Pierce Crosby, Fleet Captain,” one page, lightly-lined, 5 x 7.25, February 15, 1863. Letter to Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles. In full: “The Sangamon cannot use her guns as yet. Her steam power is available. The 15 inch gun requires probably but a days work to make it useful—the XI—Eleven inch several days, as the porthole is not large enough to admit the gun.” In very good condition, with some chipping to bottom edge and show-through at the bottom from small tape-repaired tears.
