Seventeen inch long pearl handled carving knife made by M. Price of San Francisco. A gold rush relic. Michael Price, Jr. (1833-1889) apprenticed as a cutler in Ireland before moving to San Francisco in the 1850s. His bowie knife exhibited at the first Mechanics Instititute Fair in 1860 sold for $150. The steel in a Price knife was said to be made of an alloy of iron and chromium, considered stronger than competeing blades.
