Petrified Araucaria (conifer) wood with marine Teredo mollusc borings infilled with white radiolarian slit. In simpler terms, this tree wood was bored into by marine mollusks of the Teredo genus, commonly known as "shipworms". These clam-like creatures created tunnels in the wood while it was driftwood in the sea. The process of silicification replaced the wood's organic matter with silica, creating the petrified wood. The distinctive pattern of the infilled borings is what gives Peanut Wood its name. This process is a trace fossil called Teredolites from the Cretaceous "Windalla Radiolarite" age when rock formations composed of the skeletal remains of marine microorganisms like radiolarians were formed. This indicates the Araucaria tree was carried out to sea, became waterlogged, and sank to the seabed where radiolarian ooze would collect. Found in the Kennedy Ranges of Western Australia. Near Gascoyne Junction, Inland 100 miles from the coastal town of Carnarvon. This slab measures approx. 10 x 9 x 1 inches and is a beautiful specimen polished on both faces. By far the nicest example we can find this large in size.
