Payment Deferred (MGM, 1932). Lobby Cards (5) (11" X 14"). Charles Laughton originated the role of bank clerk William Marble on Broadway, and he's eerily compelling in this domestic melodrama classic. When a wealthy nephew visits, Laughton sees an opportunity to settle his desperate need to pay his family's bills. The nephew refuses a loan, so Laughton decides to kill for the money he needs. With adultery and murder frankly discussed, the film takes advantage of the creative freedom allowed in a pre-Code Hollywood; in fact, censors had to make five dialogue cuts for a 1939 re-release. These cards illustrate the many tortured moods of Laughton in bright color. All five have pinholes in the top corners and some toning, and two cards have water stains on the left side. Fine+.
