Pawnee,OK - Pawnee County - c1907 - Statehood Celebration Photographs :
Two views of the "Celebration-To-Statehood-Of-Oklahoma-And-Indian Territory-Dec. 21-1907," as hand written along the top border. The top photograph measures 9 1/2 x 3" while the bottom measures 9 1/2 x 2 1/2". They are mounted on thick, black paper measuring 12 x 10" with holes punched on the left side (probably removed from photo album). The border of the photos and the writing is done in white. The contrast is high while the focus is good to sharp. Several crease lines and foxing are noted on both images. No photographer is listed. The top photo shows 13 men, two women, and one boy on horseback in a line across the image. Below the image but inside the border are printed names of seven of the subjects, including two women and a Jr. (may be the young man). Just below the bottom border "Groupe-of-the-Participants-Pawne [sic]-Oklahoma" has been hand printed. The bottom photograph shows a large group of people standing and sitting in a grandstand, possibly awaiting the Statehood celebration. "00=Mother -and-I=Mr. Wilson-the-announcer" is printed within the lower border, while "the-crowd-on-side-lines-and-grand-stand" is hand printed below the lower border. A third photograph from the album (the next page) is mounted on the reverse. It appears to be a schoolhouse, perhaps, with three small sketches made on the photo with black ink. Also included is a four page printout from the Tour of the Wild West: North Central Oklahoma Wild West Territory - Pawnee Oklahoma. Pawnee is known as the home of the Pawnee Indian Tribe, Showman Gordon W. Little (Pawnee Bill), and is the birthplace of Chester Gould (creator of the Dick Tracy Cartoon).
