Pawnee Mountain Lion Beaded & Quilled Pipe Bag
Absolutely stunning 19th Century porcupine-quilled and beaded hide pipe bag attributed to the Pawnee tribe in Kansas. Central Plains beadwork attributed to the Pawnee is exceedingly rare with this being a stunning example. The pipe bag exhibits an artist design consisting of Indian brain-tanned rare Mountain Lion hide rather than buckskin or buffalo hide along with being sinew and thread sewn. There is beadwork on both sides in different designs in a geometric design with typical patterns from the Central Plains region. The porcupine quill quillwork is astounding with large size having natural dyes and the continuation of the classic Central Plains styling. The bag is well kept with soft, clean hides with little to no bead loss or quillwork. The beadwork is all glass trade seed beaded with colors of greasy Cheyenne pink, semi-transparent dark green, cobalt, chalk white. The beadwork shows a tab design on one side and an hourglass like design on the other with the quillwork having a classic hourglass design as well. Truly an absolutely stunning piece being well kept from the rarely seen Pawnee Indians. Provenance: From the ex-Jim Bastian collection Kansas City, Missouri. The bag measures 39-inches long including fringes by 6-1/2-inches wide.
