An important Canadian Inuit carver, sculptor, draftsman and printmaker, Pauta Saila was born in Kilaparutua (Baffin Island), Northwest Territories, settled in Cape Dorset (Baffin Island) in the early 1960s, and died in Ottawa, Ontario. His trademark dancing bears are iconic works of Inuit art; a Pauta bear is considered a prized addition to any collection of Inuit art. His work is discussed in most of the comprehensive books about Inuit art and he is the subject of articles in every edition of the Canadian Encyclopedia since the 1980s. His works are in numerous museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) and the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa). He was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts* in 2003.
