The present lithograph by Paul Wunderlich is titled ‘Amaryllis mit Goldblatt’ (Amaryllis with Gold Leaf) and depicts a characteristic floral composition of the artist. The silhouette of the plant repeatedly suggests erotic allusions. The lithograph is a beautiful example of the late work of the artist.

The lithograph is signed in the stone lower left ‘Paul Wunderlich’ and also signed with pencil lower right ‘Wunderlich’. The work is numbered with pencil lower left ‘53/90’. The paper is embossed lower left ‘manus presse’ and shows a watermark upper left ‘ZERKALL’. A few very light handling marks affect the paper along the edges. Besides, there are some scattered very faint traces of blue paint at the lower end of the sheet. The work’s overall dimensions are 80 x 60 cm and the image size is 64.5 x 49.5 cm.



Paul Wunderlich (1927-2010)

Paul Wunderlich was a German painter, draftsman, sculptor and printmaker and predominantly depicted erotic figures. In 1947, he began his printmaking-studies at the Hamburg School of Art under Willi Tietze and Willem Grimm. After his studies he worked there as a lecturer and later as a professor, too. During this time he also printed for other artists, for example for Emil Nolde and Oskar Kokoschka. Wunderlich was awarded numerous prizes during his lifetime. (cbo)
