Paul Troger (Zell/South Tyrol 1698 - 1762 Vienna)
Paul Troger (Zell/South Tyrol 1698 - 1762 Vienna) Pietà, Modello for the large-scale painting at the Historical Museum of the City of Vienna, oil on canvas, 64 x 39,5 cm, old, gilt frame, (Wo).€ 12.000 - 18.000 US $ 11.880 - 17.820 Provenance: Austrian emigrants, USA. Expert's Report: Dr. Joachim Kronbichler, Diözesankonservator and Director of the Diözesanmuseum St. Pölten,22. July 2002: This painting without reservation shows all the painterly characteristics of an autograph work by Paul Troger. Though the format suggests that it may have been a study for the large painting at the Historisches Museum der Stadt Wien, its careful execution makes it a work of autonomous significance, and will be entered as such into the catalogue of works included in my monograph on Paul Troger currently under preparation. The Pietà portrays this traditional theme in a highly individual manner, even though the posture of Christ's body evokes the influence of Annibale Carracci's Lamentation. The close relationship with the approach evident in Georg Raphael Donner's Lamentation relief at the Österreichische Galerie (Inv. No. Lg. 5) and especially his Pieta at the Church of Gurk has already been pointed out elsewhere. Given the relatively similar date of origin, it appears possible that Troger may have intended his Pietà as a homage to his friend Donner, who died in 1741. A valued vesper painting is also documented as having been sold as part of the estate of Paul Troger during the auction on 26. November 1762. Literature: cf. W. Aschenbrenner-G.
